Busy day! It is all about being the symbolic first day of spring season--without the official calendar date of March 21. It is a day of predictions about what our gardening year may be like. For instance, while we might love the occasional warm days of February, an old saying warns that lots of fog in February will mean lots of frosts in May. Groundhogs know what is going on, so pay attention to see what the next 6 weeks has in store and plan accordingly.
Imbolc/Candlemas is a Celtic holyday that harkens the beginnings of spring with some of the same symbols we usually reserve for Easter...eggs, dairy foods and seeds. It is a festival that calls for candles/bonfire and some sort of baked dessert that uses the above foods.
It may still be cold outside, but things beneath the surface are just beginning to "stir"--which is why the Full moon of this month is also called the "Quickening" moon.
