New Year Resolutions for Herbalists

Follow me this month while I try to clear out my own chaos and get a few tips on how to get your herb cabinet and/or business back in order! January is a perfect time for reflection and planning, but also, we have time for getting things done since the rush of garden season is still a few months away, the snow keeps us at home a bit more....as does the promise of a warm house and hot cup of tea. Each day, I am going to tackle something that needs constant care or attention, but that is often left to become dysfunctional as the year goes on. Will this be the year, I actually keep on top of things? Who knows...but if not, I will repost next year!

January 20 ~

Evaluation Day

I think we get overwhelmed because we save all our self review for New Year's or Rosh Hoshana...or during a crisis. In fact, life is so full and busy, we need numerous times, on a regular basis, to really stay on track. I have found it helpful, in the past, to chose one day each month to assess how things are going on all levels. When I stopped doing it, I have felt "unpinned" from my place in the life and seasonal cycles. During those times, negativity can take hold and snowball until many things are simply overwhelming. Conversely, when I take time to evaluate and can catch problems before the go too long unnoticed, I can be proactive--not overwhelmed by a perceived chaos. Positve snowballing is much more pleasant and productive!!

Sharing this experience with friends/students or clients as a first step in dealing with MILD depression or anxiety may be helpful. Sometimes it is all they need....but no matter how serious their problems may be and how many other healing modes they may need, regular self-reflection will always be worthwhile.

Half way through this month is a good time to stop and reflect, but I used to enjoy doing it on the New Moon/Rosh Chodesh.....do little or no "work", think, relax and of course, sip tea!

So far, this month, I am doing pretty well. I have stuck to my plans and ideals (except I did break down and buy a few new books!!)...and I feel so much better--in spite of the flu and cold that have circulated through this house and recovering from holiday overeating, emotional improvement and spiritual balance have been a real gift....and other family members are doing well too.

Self evaluation on one or more levels,  is one of the first things I ask of clients, because I know its therapeutic value in regaining health. But, it also has great value in maintaining health.

Take a look. How are you doing, so far?
