Last night was my first speaking engagement of the year...a lecture for my local Garden Club about what plants gardeners typically grow that can be used medicinally. Teaching herbalism is my true calling--rather than growing/crafting.....so after a several year hiatus from hosting classes and Apprenticeships, I am returning to a limited teaching schedule this Spring and to a full schedule next year. 

This summer, the bulk of my classes will be sponsored through the local DCMO BOCES. Here are the offerings:

 

 

Backyard Herbalist ~Mini-Apprenticeship Program ***NEW***

Over a three month period, budding herbalists will have access to herb and vegetable gardens, as well as fields and field and woods of Mountain Spring Homestead to learn identification of common local plants, how to use them to make salves, teas, tinctures, tonics and various other preparations, gardening, harvesting, storage, basic herbal first aid, family health, local natural history, philosophy of herbalism, being stewards of the land, using foods as medicine…. and so much more! Projects to do on your own during non-class time will also be suggested. During the three months, your instructor will be available to consult with you by phone or e-mail. All supplies, recipes and handouts will be provided along with herbal snacks and tea. (Minimum of 4 to run the class. )

*** Materials fee of $80 will be paid to the instructor the first day of class.

9 Hours $50

Aging Wisely ~Herbs for the Young at Heart ***NEW***

Learning gentle ways to cope gracefully with the natural changes of aging.

Nutritional and health needs change as we grow older, but satisfaction and vitality do not have to be sacrificed. Specific health conditions, herbs foods, tonics, exercises and ways of seeing how aging has its benefits, will be discussed. Every student will put together a tea suited to their own particular needs, An herbal snack and tea will be provided.

*** A $10 materials fee will be paid to the instructor the day of the class. (Minimum of 4 to run the class)

Healing with the Seasons ***NEW***

In modern times, how can we reconnect to nature’s rhythms and improve our health?

Many health concerns are self imposed simply by working against seasonal needs of our bodies….so, we will discuss each season with attention to foods, herbs, activities, celebrations and ancestral wisdom. Learn about seasonal rituals, how to change your cooking and eating habits and how to distinguish seasonal health promoting tasks from those that are not! Students will take an herb/weed walk make a few preparations and become acquainted with the natural cycles of the year. An herbal snack and tea will be served. ( Minimum of 5 students to run the class.)
